Life On The Farm

Thomas Jefferson once said, "In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock".

Growing up on a farm, as 1 of 7 brothers has its advantages and disadvantages. A few of the rules:　

The cattle always break through the fence at night in the rain.
"I am tired" is not a viable excuse to sleep late or go home early.
Milking the family dairy cow meant I could whip any kid in my school in arm wrestling.
Your high school date may have to help you change the irrigation.
"Get him to do it" never works because he seldom wants to do it either.
Whenever Dad called "Tom, Jim, Bennett" you better run or hide because it meant he needed a boy to do a job
The dinner table was always set for 2 or 3 friends to join us.

Throughout high school I was determined that anything but the farm was a part of my future. I was convinced I was willing to go wherever life took me away from the farm.I floated along.

I headed off to Virginia Tech to study engineering. I met a dairy farm girl from West Virginia. She had no aspirations of the farm either. With career aspirations of being an engineer, something happened that I cannot put a finger on. I ran into a rock. Upon graduation from Virginia Tech, I immediately returned to the farm. I married my college sweetheart a year later.　

Today life is similar to growing up minus the milking of the cows. I am sales manager for the farm. I have five kids and sometimes more.　I live in the same house I grew up in and I have never received a paycheck from anyone who was not a Saunders. And, Saunders Brothers still stands on the same principles of honesty, morality, and integrity that my Grandfather and his brothers believed in nearly 100 years ago.
