The buds of the flower plumes are reddish burgundy and the blossoms are a rich lavender, the foliage bronze to green, all of which combine to provide a glowing, two-tone effect. Astilbe 'Purple Candles' is a little taller and later blooming than the species and even though Astilbes are generally touted for wet site application, this variety will tolerate drier soils.
